In an emblematic show of deepening ties, Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck is set for a significant four-day visit to Bangladesh, starting Monday. This visit not only underscores the longstanding friendship between Bangladesh and Bhutan since 1971 but also paves the way for future collaborations and mutual growth.

Warm Welcome and High-Level Meetings

Upon his arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, President Mohammed Shahabuddin, along with the First Lady, will greet King Wangchuck with full honors, including a gun salute and guard of honor. His itinerary includes a tribute at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, honoring the Father of the Nation, followed by pivotal meetings with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud to discuss bilateral relations and sign several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs).

Engagements and Tributes

The king’s agenda is rich with engagements that symbolize the friendship and respect between the two nations. The king’s schedule includes visits to the National Martyrs’ Memorial at Savar, the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn & Plastic Surgery, and Bangabhaban, where significant interactions with top governmental officials are planned. Notably, the visit to the proposed “Bhutanese Special Economic Zone” in Kurigram showcases the developmental aspect of Bhutan-Bangladesh relations, with the potential to boost employment and economic growth in the region.

Departure and Reflections

After a series of official visits and the marking of new beginnings, the king, alongside Queen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck and a select delegation, will conclude their visit. This trip is not only a testament to the shared history and camaraderie but also a step towards a brighter, shared future, marked by the establishment of the special economic zone in Kurigram.

Enhancing Bilateral Transit and Trade

In March 2023, a landmark agreement on the movement of traffic-in-transit was signed, granting Bhutan access to 15 entry and exit points in Bangladesh, with Bhutan designating eight entry and exit points for Bangladesh. This agreement, vital for enhancing bilateral trade and providing alternative transit routes for Bhutan’s trade with third countries, signifies the practical steps being taken towards economic cooperation and integration between the two countries.
