100 crores loss to LGED due to flood in Feni

The township of Feni was affected by the worst flood in memory. As the floodwater recedes, signs of damage are visible. Most of the roads in 6 upazilas of the district including the Dhaka-Chittagong highway were submerged in water and the road communication was closed. Most of the roads have become impassable due to water flow.

In the district, the damage to the roads under the jurisdiction of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) and Roads and Township Department (SOAZ) is estimated at Tk 140 crore 48 lakh 47 thousand. Out of this, the loss of LGED is approximately 99 crore 50 lakh taka and the loss of SOAZ is approximately 40 crore 98 lakh 47 thousand taka. Out of 4,356 km of roads in the district under LGED alone, 3,305 km of roads have been submerged in water and damaged. After the flood, the two departments confirmed this information to Barta24.com.
According to the information provided by the Roads and Township (Soaz) Department, almost all of the 19 roads in the district have been more or less damaged by the floods. It caused an estimated loss of 40 crore 98 lakh 47 thousand rupees. Among the roads, Dhaka-Chittagong highway has been damaged about 4 km. Apart from this, other roads have been submerged due to water damage.
According to the information given by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), 3 thousand 305 km out of 4 thousand 356 km of roads in six upazilas of the district have been submerged and damaged. It caused an estimated loss of 99 crore 50 lakh rupees.
Locals say that they have to suffer while moving on the broken roads after being affected by the third flood in a month and a half. On the one hand, the houses are destroyed by the flood and on the other hand, the road is impassable. People of different areas of Feni are passing miserable life in such condition. Roads are still submerged in flood water in some parts of the district.

A road in Durbarpur Union of Fulgazi Upazila was broken at 17 places. As a result, the communication with this township has been cut off from the district city and various upazilas. The locals are suffering.

Abdul Awal Babul, a local resident of Durbarpur in Fulgazi, said that the road has broken in different places due to the strong flow of water. The intensity of the water was very high due to the river Muhuri next to it. As a result, houses and roads are all submerged in water. The Union’s main road was broken at several places. Even if the car comes with relief, it cannot go inside. People are moving by making bamboo poles.

Sakhina Begum said that she had to walk a long way. I can’t even go to the market to get anything for urgent needs. The water in the river has receded, but there is no certainty when our misery will end. If someone is sick, there is no condition to take them to the hospital. He demanded to fix these roads quickly.

Abdul Awal, a resident of Parashuram, said that the third flood in a span of one and a half months has caused extensive damage on the Parashuram-Subar Bazar road. At first sight there is no way to understand that there was even a road here. If the only road used by thousands of people is not repaired quickly, we will have to suffer endlessly.

Nazrul Islam, a resident of Chagalnaya upazila, said that several roads in the upazila are in poor condition. Some roads are not even accessible for walking. These roads need to be renovated on an urgent basis.

Sayem Ullah Chowdhury, a resident of Nijkunjra area of ​​Chagalnaya Ghopal Union, said that the work on the road in front of the house was ongoing. After the fall of the government there is no progress in the work. Half of the pitch is done and the rest is brick concrete. All the concrete was washed away by the flood water. Now there is no condition to walk. He demanded the speedy completion of the road work.

In this regard, the Executive Engineer of Feni Roads and Township Department (Soaz) Vinay Kumar Pal said, some roads under our jurisdiction are still submerged in water. It will take some more time to know the final extent of the damage. The final amount of damage will be assessed on site. However, at the initial stage, an estimated loss of 40 crore 98 lakh 47 thousand rupees has been estimated.

More than 3,000 kilometers of roads under the jurisdiction of the local government engineering department in the district were submerged in water due to floods.

He said that more than 500 km of LGED roads were broken in different parts. About 40 bridge-culverts were damaged. Assessing the extent of damage initially as the water recedes. He said that the repair work of the damaged road will start soon.
