A separate notification has been issued by removing 493 upazila chairman. On Sunday (August 18) a notification in this regard has been issued by the local government department. Besides, due to death, the post of Chairman of Koira Upazila Parishad has been declared vacant.

Meanwhile, in a separate notification, the local government department removed 323 municipal mayors and 60 district council chairmen elected during the Awami government.
A government bulletin on August 16 said that the government can remove mayors and councilors of any city corporation and municipality in the public interest if it is deemed necessary in special circumstances. Similarly, the chairman and members of the zilla parishad and the chairman, vice chairman and female vice chairmen of the upazila parishad can be removed. At the same time, the government can appoint administrators in these.

By making such provisions as ‘Local Government (City Corporations) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’, ‘Local Government (Municipalities) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’, ‘District Councils (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’ and ‘Upazilla Parishad (Amendment) Ordinance , 2024’ has been approved by the Advisory Council of the Interim Government. The next day on August 17, the President issued an ordinance in this regard.
