Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that modern technology and technology have been introduced in the Bangladesh Meteorological Department in the past years to deal with natural disasters.

The Prime Minister said that Bangladesh is one of the countries that are at risk of various natural disasters. The Awami League government is determined to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals announced by the United Nations. For this purpose, the government has taken various activities including 100-year delta plan, five-year plan with priority on climate change adaptation system. Through the implementation of all these plans in stages, Bangladesh will be able to achieve the status of an upper middle income country by 2030 and become a developed country in 2041.

He said, ‘Awami League government has introduced modern technology and technology in the Bangladesh Meteorological Department in the past years to deal with natural disasters. As a result, the overall capacity of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has increased and it is playing an important role in providing various term forecasts and warnings of various natural disasters caused by climate change and other extreme weather. As a result of taking various effective measures in advance forecasting, the government is working to prevent environmental disasters, determine economic development supporting strategies, best use of natural resources, and build a climate change tolerant Bangladesh to overcome the challenges and effects of climate change. Bangladesh is the world’s role model in disaster management. Bangladesh is playing a significant role in determining climate change policy at the international level as well.

Sheikh Hasina said, “Our government has strengthened research activities on agricultural meteorology with the establishment of 7 new agricultural meteorological observatories to improve the quality of agricultural meteorological forecasting services along with the existing meteorological observatories. Also, 5 meteorological surface observatories, 13 earthquake monitoring centers have been established. 3 satellite ground receiving stations have been installed. Already, 1 modern Doppler radar has been installed at Joydevpur for safe flight and landing of Kalbaisakhi and thunderstorms and another 1 Doppler radar is in progress at Rangpur.

The Prime Minister said, “Let’s all build a developed and prosperous Smart Sonar Bangla, the lifelong dream of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib.”

He wished the overall success of ‘World Meteorological Day-2024’.
