India’s 77th Republic Day parade placed Operation Sindoor at the heart of its military narrative, highlighting what officials describe as a decisive shift in how the country responds to terrorism and external threats.
Launched on May 7, 2025, Operation Sindoor was carried out jointly by the Army, Navy, and Air Force following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley that killed 26 civilians. The operation and its outcomes were prominently displayed through the tri-services tableau at Kartavya Path, underscoring India’s emphasis on jointness and indigenous defence capability.
A Coordinated Strike and a New Military Doctrine
According to the government, Operation Sindoor targeted nine terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir linked to multiple militant groups. More than 100 militants were reported killed, including figures associated with past high-profile attacks.
Defence officials described the operation as a response to evolving asymmetric warfare, stressing that Indian forces carried out precise strikes without crossing the Line of Control or international boundaries. The emphasis, they said, was not only on tactical execution but also on the integration of domestically developed systems across air, land, and electronic domains.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi later framed Operation Sindoor as a new national policy against terrorism, stating that India would determine the timing, scale, and nature of its responses.
Technology, Retaliation, and Escalation Control
The operation marked a milestone in India’s push for defence self-reliance. Indigenous air defence systems, drones, electronic warfare tools, and command-and-control platforms played a central role in both offensive and defensive actions.
After India’s initial strikes, Pakistan attempted retaliatory attacks using drones and missiles on multiple Indian military installations. These were intercepted by India’s integrated air defence and counter-drone systems. Subsequent Indian counterstrikes targeted air defence assets and military infrastructure inside Pakistan, including key air bases.
Government officials said the operations demonstrated India’s ability to conduct rapid, high-intensity missions while managing escalation. Military actions ceased following talks between the two sides’ Directors General of Military Operations on May 10.
Republic Day Tableau and the Message It Sent
At the Republic Day parade, the tri-services tableau titled Operation Sindoor: Victory Through Jointness showcased major platforms used during the mission, including artillery, air defence systems, loitering munitions, and frontline fighter aircraft.
Flypasts featuring multiple formations reinforced the visual narrative of air dominance and coordination. The display, officials said, was meant to signal not just military strength, but a broader transformation in doctrine, preparedness, and political resolve.
