Senegal’s newly elected President Basiru Diomay Faye has appointed Ousmane Sonko as the country’s new prime minister, Reuters reported.

Osman is said to be the leader of the anti-corruption movement in this African country. Also, he is known as a close friend and one of the supporters of the new president.

He was also a staunch critic of the outgoing Senegalese government, NDTV reported.

After being appointed as Prime Minister, Osman said, he gave the list of new cabinet members to the President. A full-fledged government will be formed after getting his approval.

The 49-year-old Sonko also said, “President Faye has a heavy responsibility now.” There is no question of leaving him alone in this difficult time.

Earlier, 44-year-old Faye was sworn in as Senegal’s new president on Tuesday (April 3).

After this, he appointed Osman as the Prime Minister in the first order.

Faye succeeded Mackie Saul as president. McKee Saul ruled the country for 12 years. Faye’s swearing-in ended fears that he would try to extend his reign to a third term.

By the way, the Senegalese have been in uncertainty for several months. But the victory of the young and anti-establishment Fayre in the presidential election and last week’s election has brought a sense of relief among the countrymen that change is happening.

Faye was still in prison just 20 days before the election.
