 Commitment to Reconciliation

US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Donald Lu, emphasized the US’s intention to mend relations with Bangladesh during his recent discussions with Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud. Lu acknowledged the strains that surfaced last year, largely due to pressures related to advocating for democratic elections in Bangladesh.

 Future-Oriented Cooperation
Lu outlined a forward-looking approach, focusing on resolving challenging issues like sanctions on the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), labor reforms, and enhancing the business climate to strengthen bilateral relations. “We’re aiming to tackle these tough topics head-on,” he remarked, underscoring a commitment to enhancing mutual interests.

Expanding Ties in Education and Clean Energy
In his commitment to deepen US-Bangladesh ties, Lu highlighted initiatives such as increasing Bangladeshi student enrollment in US universities, encouraging new investments, and collaborative efforts in clean energy development. The US is also keen on supporting Bangladesh’s fight against corruption, promoting transparency, and aiding in broadening the tax base.

Discussions on Environmental and Bilateral Concerns
Lu’s visit also included meetings with Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury and Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen, where they deliberated on various bilateral issues. These discussions are part of Lu’s broader agenda to foster a free and prosperous Indo-Pacific region through strengthened US-Bangladesh cooperation.
