Illegal Arms from Myanmar Seized in Bangladesh

Firearms and Ammunition Recovered

Bangladesh police have recovered a cache of illegal firearms and ammunition smuggled from Myanmar. In operations conducted in Ukhia and Teknaf upazilas of Cox’s Bazar, authorities seized a foreign G3 rifle, shooter guns, and 92 rounds of ammunition.

Arrests and Operations

Starting from May 14, five individuals were arrested in connection with this operation. At a press conference, Cox’s Bazar Superintendent of Police Mahafuzul Islam disclosed details of the arrests and the ongoing investigation.

Organized Arms Trafficking

The police identified an organized gang smuggling weapons from Myanmar into Bangladesh. Those arrested include Chayed’s son Mostaq Ahmad, Rabiul Alam, Kashem Prakash Monia, Latifa Akhtar, and Bellal Hossain. Mahafuzul Islam explained that four suspects were apprehended in a raid on Mostaq’s house, yielding shooter guns and ammunition.

Further Seizures

Bellal Hossain, arrested in Teknaf, provided information leading to the discovery of a G3 rifle, magazine, and ammunition hidden under sand on the Shamlapur seashore. Notably, Mostaq Ahmad is a notorious criminal with multiple cases and warrants against him, while arms dealer Rabiul Alam faces several charges as well.

Continued Crackdown

Two cases have been filed under the Arms Act in Ukhia and Teknaf police stations, and the suspects have been remanded for five days. Efforts to apprehend additional gang members are ongoing. Recently, a RAB operation at the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army’s hideout resulted in the capture of two terrorists and the seizure of weapons, grenades, and rocket cells.
