China’s public security minister, Wang Xiaohong, and US Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, agreed in a video call on Thursday to maintain open lines of communication regarding anti-narcotics and law enforcement cooperation.

Deepening Cooperation:
Wang emphasized the need for both nations to continue and deepen their cooperation on drug control, the repatriation of illegal immigrants, and combating transnational crime. He urged the US to respect China’s concerns and demonstrate sincerity through practical actions, aiming to boost bilateral cooperation.

Anti-Narcotics Working Group:
The call follows the formation of an anti-narcotics working group during the November summit between Xi Jinping and Joe Biden. This group focuses on tackling the fentanyl crisis, with China agreeing to restrict shipments of precursor chemicals used in drug manufacturing.

Progress and Challenges:
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken acknowledged China’s efforts in curbing fentanyl production during his April visit. However, Wang called for the US to cease the “harassment” of Chinese students at US borders, highlighting ongoing tensions.

Immigration Issues:
Both countries are addressing the rise in illegal Chinese immigration to the US, with over 37,000 Chinese nationals arrested at the southern border in 2023. Discussions continue on deportation agreements and managing the influx of illegal immigrants.
