14 lakh drug dealers have been arrested: Home Minister

Against 11 lakh 13 thousand 470 cases of drug control across the country, 14 lakh drug dealers have been arrested. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said that they were arrested from 2009 to April 2024.
The Home Minister gave this information in response to a written question by Member of Parliament for Bhola-3 Constituency Nurunnabi Chowdhury in the budget session of the Jatiya Sangsad on Wednesday (June 12).

The Home Minister said that like other countries in the world, drug addiction is increasing among young people in Bangladesh at an alarming rate. Although Bangladesh is not a drug producing country, it is under the grip of drug problem mainly due to geographical reasons. Illegal drugs enter our country from neighboring countries. Yaba, the most talked about drug of the time, is imported from Myanmar. Ganja, phensidyl, heroin and injecting drugs enter our country from India.
The Home Minister said that the government has taken multifaceted steps in the last 15 years to eradicate drugs. That is why dope test has been introduced to identify drug addicts. Dope tests are being conducted to identify drug addicts in government jobs and university admissions. The introduction of this dope test will discourage the youth from taking drugs.
Stating that public awareness is being created on drug use, the Home Minister said that in the last 16 years, 83,417 anti-drug meetings, seminars and workshops and anti-drug short films have been shown at 137 places by the Narcotics Control Department. At the same time, 971 anti-drug discussion meetings have been organized among inmates in various prisons of the country and anti-drug meetings have been organized in 55 thousand 898 educational institutions.

The minister said that 5 thousand 83 teachers have been trained as mentors to stop taking drugs. 31 thousand 80 anti-drug committees have been formed in educational institutions. 465 kiosks have been set up at various locations. 104 anti-drug talk shows have been aired.

The minister also said that 543 anti-drug advertisements or TV scrolls have been circulated in print media and 510 in electronic media. 3 lakh 80 thousand 982 stickers containing the harmful effects of drugs on the human body, 64 lakh 17 thousand 17 anti-drug leaflets; 12 thousand 575 acrylic PVC boards, one lakh masks, 35 thousand 816 notebooks, 64 thousand 151 pens, 20 thousand 70 T-shirts, 20 thousand 75 caps, 3 lakh 17 thousand 53 geometry boxes, 7 lakh 28 thousand scales to various educational institutions and unions. It has been distributed to government offices of public importance till the stage.
