Abu Taher (26), son of Tara Mia of Titas Upazila, Comilla. A few years ago, he was a mobile shop worker with a salary of 6 thousand taka. Now under his leadership, thousands of illegal mobile phones are being smuggled into the country.

RAB says that this gang brought more than 2500 illegal mobile phones into the country in 5 consignments in the last one and a half months and released them in the market.

RAB arrested four members of the gang along with a large quantity of illegal mobile phones in a raid in Narayanganj on Saturday (June 29) night.

The arrestees are – the ringleader Abu Taher (26), Md. Mehdi Hasan (22), Md. Rubel Hossain (29) and Md. Noor Nabi (32). At that time, more than 800 features and smart phones and two cars were seized from them.

Commander of RAB-3 Lt. Col. Feroz Kabir gave this information in a press conference at Karwan Bazar in the capital on Sunday (June 30) evening.

He said that the intelligence information was that a gang has been selling stolen mobile phones from the Indian border in Comilla for a long time and selling them in various markets. Following this, 808 stolen mobile phones and two private cars were seized in a raid in Sonargaon area of Narayanganj district on Saturday night.

The RAB-3 captain also said that this gang used to bring various brands of mobile phones made in Indian factories to the capital using the Comilla-Dhaka route through smugglers. Due to revenue evasion, these mobile phones sold at low prices are in high demand in the market. Also, as the IMI numbers of these phones are not registered with BTRC, criminals use these smuggled mobiles for various criminal activities.

The arrested Abu Taher is the mastermind of the gang. He started working as a salesman in a mobile showroom in Gauripur area of Comilla district 3 years ago. From then on, he developed an affinity with the mobile smuggling gangs organized illegally in various border routes of Comilla. At one stage, in addition to working in the mobile showroom, he himself started supplying stolen mobile phones of Indian brands to various markets of the capital including Comilla. He himself formed a conglomerate in the hope of making more money in a short period of time. The gang led by him initially admitted to have delivered five large consignments to Dhaka in the last one and a half months through the Comilla border area.

One of the accomplices of Abu Taher, the mastermind of the Mehdi gang, was arrested. He is a resident of Comilla Sadar Dakshin. He is said to be involved with Taher in the smuggling of mobile phones through an acquaintance of his brother. He claims that he is a paid employee of Sajjad alias Shakeel of Comilla Sadar. However, the truth of his claim was not found.
