The Thai government is evaluating the possibility of lifting the afternoon alcohol sales ban to support struggling restaurants and boost tourism. The ban, which prohibits alcohol sales from 2 pm to 5 pm, was introduced in 1972 and has since been a point of confusion for many tourists.

Economic Impact and Industry Challenges

The Restaurant Business Club has called on Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to consider lifting the ban, citing rising operating costs and ingredient prices that have forced many establishments to close. Allowing alcohol sales during the afternoon could provide a significant economic boost, potentially generating up to 10 billion baht in revenue.

Current Alcohol Sales Regulations

Currently, alcohol can be sold from 11 am to 2 pm and from 5 pm to midnight. The proposed change would allow sales in hotels and possibly other establishments during the afternoon, subject to the approval of provincial governors. This move aims to align regulations with tourism promotion efforts, as many international visitors expect to enjoy alcoholic beverages throughout the day.
