Netflix’s co-chief executive, Ted Sarandos, believes streaming has significantly enhanced global empathy and safety. Speaking on the tech podcast Hard Fork, Sarandos highlighted how Netflix’s diverse content fosters understanding across cultures.

Since taking on his role in 2020 alongside co-chief executive Greg Peters, Sarandos has seen Netflix achieve record profits. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, Netflix generated $9.37 billion in revenue and gained 9.3 million new subscribers globally.

Cultural Empathy Through Storytelling

Sarandos pointed to films like the Oscar-winning The Separation, which portrays an Iranian couple’s struggle, as examples of how storytelling bridges cultural gaps. He emphasized that such narratives help viewers recognize shared human experiences, thus making the world “a smaller, safer place.”

Netflix’s Algorithmic Magic

Netflix’s sophisticated algorithms play a crucial role in this cultural exchange. The series Baby Reindeer, initially popular in the UK, became a global hit thanks to Netflix’s recommendation system. Sarandos praised the series for its authentic storytelling, which resonates with audiences worldwide.
