In a recent statement, Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud appealed for collective responsibility and composure in response to the hijacking of the Bangladeshi ship, MV Abdullah. Mahmud emphasized the importance of a united and cautious approach to ensure the safety and eventual liberation of the crew members and the vessel itself.

“The resolution of this situation requires careful consideration and collective action. Our primary objective remains the safe return of the sailors and the MV Abdullah. By acting responsibly and cooperatively, we can navigate through this challenge more effectively,” Mahmud stated, highlighting the need for solidarity and wise action.

The Foreign Minister also pointed out the hijackers’ access to Bangladesh’s television broadcasts, noting the potential for media coverage to influence the hijackers’ stance. “Excessive media focus, especially on the distress of the hostages’ families, could harden the hijackers’ resolve, leading to adverse effects,” he cautioned, urging for media restraint.

Drawing on past successes, Mahmud reminded the public of the government’s capability to negotiate the release of hijacked ships and crew, referencing a particular instance where a ship and its crew were freed after 100 days through combined efforts. “With our continued collective efforts, we remain hopeful for the safe return of our sailors and the MV Abdullah,” he concluded, instilling a sense of optimism amidst the crisis.
