The United States is deploying more fighter jets and naval ships to the Middle East, aiming to strengthen Israel’s defense against threats from Iran and its allies, Hamas and Hezbollah, the Pentagon announced on August 2.

Following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, Iran has pledged retaliation. In response, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has approved the deployment of additional F-22 fighter jets and navy vessels capable of intercepting ballistic missiles. The aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln will replace the Theodore Roosevelt in the region to maintain a robust US presence.

A senior Pentagon official indicated that some ships currently in the Mediterranean will reposition closer to Israel’s coast for enhanced security. These adjustments aim to bolster US force protection and support for Israel, ensuring preparedness for various scenarios, the Pentagon stated.

In Israel, anticipation of Iran’s response has led local officials to advise residents to stock up on supplies and prepare safe rooms. Emergency drills have been conducted, and medical centers in northern Israel are ready to relocate patients to underground facilities if necessary.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have vowed a severe response, blaming Israel for Haniyeh’s death and accusing the US of complicity. Hezbollah, Iran’s ally, has been in near-daily conflict with Israeli forces, signaling that future attacks may target deeper into Israel and include civilian areas.

The US had already ramped up military deployments following Iran’s drone and missile attacks on Israel in April. Israel, with US support, successfully intercepted most of the attacks, but concerns persist about Hezbollah’s substantial arsenal and proximity to Israel.

US officials, including President Joe Biden, have been in discussions with Israeli leaders, emphasizing the need to de-escalate tensions. Airlines like Singapore Airlines have adjusted flight routes to avoid Iranian and Iraqi airspace due to the heightened risk.
