He was born on August 17, 1946. Father Nani Basak was a scout coach and football referee. She learned dance from Bulbul Lalitkala Academy as a child. He became known for his excellent dancing skills. After seeing Shabnam’s dance in an event, veteran producer Ehtesham gave her an opportunity to dance in the movie. At the same time, he got the opportunity to act in small roles in some other movies.
Despite debuting in Bangladeshi films, he gained skyrocketing popularity for Pakistan in Urdu films in the post-independence period. Not only that, he has also won all possible awards and recognitions in Pakistani cinema. He has received Pakistan’s best film award ‘Niger Award’ 12 times, a record he still holds today. Received National Award of Pakistan three times. He was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2019 Lux Style Awards for his outstanding contribution to the Pakistani film industry.
After independence, he became a regular in Bangladeshi cinema. Played here too. In 1961, Shabnam gained immense popularity through the Bengali film Harano Din. In 1962, he became an overnight star in the whole of Pakistan with the Urdu film ‘Chanda’. Both these films were released from Dhaka in the then East-Pakistan (now Bangladesh). In the following year, when Talash was released in Pakistan, it became the highest grossing film of that time. Shabnam emerged as the most popular actress in Pakistan in the mid-sixties. Due to his professional attitude, he settled permanently in Karachi, Pakistan in 1968.
In the early seventies, Shabnam established herself as the most popular actress in the history of Pakistan in Lollywood (Lahore). She dominated the Pakistani film industry as a heroine until the end of the eighties with great brilliance. Ithisha said that from the sixties to the eighties, he won the hearts of innumerable audiences by playing romantic roles continuously and successfully for three decades.
