Only 4 of 40: The Real Travel Picture for Bangladeshi Passport Holders

Bangladeshis often hear that nearly 40 countries are visa-free or visa-on-arrival. The reality is tougher: only four destinations have direct flights from Dhaka, and most others combine visa hurdles with costly, multi-stop itineraries.

Where It’s Actually Easier

Saudi Arabia, Bhutan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Maldives are comparatively straightforward for entry. Among these, only Nepal (Kathmandu), Sri Lanka (Colombo), Maldives (Malé) and Bhutan (Paro) have non-stop flights from Dhaka—cutting time, risk and total trip cost.

Why “Visa-Free” Doesn’t Mean Accessible

Many so-called “visa-free/VoA” places are remote, have limited connectivity from Bangladesh, or impose hidden costs (e.g., tourist levies, e- authorisations). By the time you add two layovers and a higher fare, affordability—and feasibility—drop sharply.

Countries With Complex Processes

Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Laos, Jordan, Singapore and Cambodia generally require heavier paperwork, tighter screening and uncertain timelines. Most routes also need one or two layovers via regional hubs.

Where Approval Rates Are Low

Hong Kong, Thailand, China, Japan, Indonesia, Egypt and Turkey are frequently reported by applicants as high-scrutiny or high-rejection destinations—especially for first-time solo travelers without strong financials or travel history.

Limited or Suspended Right Now

Vietnam, Romania, Croatia, India and Uzbekistan have been operating with tighter quotas, added conditions or partial suspensions for Bangladeshis. Always check the latest official notices before booking or applying.

Recent Policy Shifts (What Changed)

Vietnam and India. Vietnam has tightened entry for tourists by leaning on pre-approval via local sponsors before embassy submission—effectively halting standard walk-in tourist attempts. India has scaled down or scrutinised certain categories (including some medical visas), lowering approval volumes compared to earlier periods. Applicants should verify current guidance and appointment availability before making payments or travel plans.

Thailand and Malaysia. A recent notice from the Royal Thai Embassy in Dhaka indicated it would accept up to about 400 visa applications per day under its updated system, alongside stricter documentation checks for tourist visas. Malaysia has visibly stepped up border scrutiny at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL); incomplete itineraries, weak documentation or unclear purpose of travel can trigger denial of entry and return flights. Carry return tickets, confirmed accommodation, proof of funds and a day-by-day itinerary.
