Soaring Displacement and Migration Challenges
According to the World Migration Report 2024 by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Bangladesh faced severe displacement issues due to disasters, with over 1.5 million people displaced in 2022 alone. The nation ranks fifth in Asia in terms of displacement caused by climate change.

IOM Director’s Insight
Amy Pope, the IOM Director General, unveiled the findings at a ceremony in Dhaka, stressing the complex migration issues in Bangladesh. Irregular migration paths often make migrants vulnerable, evidenced by the fact that 12% of all deaths during Mediterranean crossings involved Bangladeshis.

Climate Impact and Economic Shifts
The report points to worsening climate conditions as a constant threat, with frequent disasters becoming the norm in South Asia. Despite these challenges, Bangladesh remains a significant player in global migration and remittances, being the sixth-largest origin country for migrants and eighth in remittance receipts. However, remittances saw a slight decline from $21.75 billion in 2020 to $21.50 billion in 2022.

Global Migration Trends
The global scenario shows a dramatic increase in international remittances, which surged by 650% from 2000 to 2022. The migrant population also hit a new high, totaling 281 million by the end of 2022.

Bangladesh’s Strategic Migration Discussions
A high-level dialogue on the “Future of Migration and Bangladesh Perspective” emphasized international cooperation for managing migration effectively. Key government officials discussed the future of migration, highlighting the need for policies that ensure the safety and welfare of migrants.

Emphasizing Data-Driven Policies
Amy Pope advocated for data-driven strategies to handle migration effectively, emphasizing a holistic societal approach. The event also included discussions on policy advocacy and international cooperation to bolster Bangladesh’s development, especially as it approaches graduation from LDC status in 2026.
