Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced significant advancements in transforming the Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) into a modern, three-dimensional force, equipped with the latest in smart technology, ships, and helicopters to meet the challenges of the 21st century. During the celebration of the 29th founding anniversary of the BCG and BCG Day-2024 at the Coast Guard Headquarters in Dhaka’s Agargaon, the Prime Minister revealed plans to incorporate advanced maritime surveillance systems, high-speed boats, and a high-quality modern ship into the coast guard fleet.

This enhancement strategy includes the integration of the Vsatnet Communication System, connected to the Bangabandhu Satellite-1, which will significantly boost the force’s communication and operational capabilities. Furthermore, the approval to purchase two helicopters and the formation of an aviation wing are part of the efforts to establish the coast guard as a comprehensive three-dimensional force. Additionally, the government has agreed to acquire four more Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) and two maritime helicopters, aimed at patrolling and ensuring safety in deep-sea areas.

Emphasizing the importance of securing the nation’s vast maritime borders, where 90% of business transactions occur via marine routes, Sheikh Hasina highlighted the strategic initiatives to strengthen the BCG. These initiatives include plans to expand the fleet with nine replacement ships and the induction of 16 ships and 138 boats, enhancing the force’s operational capacity. The Prime Minister also announced plans to increase the coast guard’s manpower to 15,000, in phases, aligning with the modernization efforts to safeguard the sea and its resources more effectively.

The construction of a dockyard in Gazaria, Munshiganj, for vessel maintenance and the government’s focus on boosting tourism reflect broader aspirations to make Bangladesh a pivotal hub between the East and the West. Sheikh Hasina praised the coast guard’s commitment to serving coastal communities and underscored the critical role the force will play in achieving the vision of a developed, prosperous, and smart Bangladesh by 2041.

Reflecting on the history of the BCG, the Prime Minister reminded attendees that the force was established in 1994, thanks to initiatives by the Awami League. Since then, significant strides have been made in developing the coast guard’s capabilities, highlighting the government’s continued commitment to enhancing maritime security and operational effectiveness. During the event, Sheikh Hasina also honored former and current coast guard personnel with various medals for their service and bravery, reaffirming the nation’s appreciation for their dedication to protecting Bangladesh’s maritime interests.
