At least 35 migrants have been reported dead after a boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Djibouti in the Red Sea. Children are also among the dead migrants.

This information was published in a BBC report on Tuesday (April 23).

According to the report, 19 migrants have died in the North African country of Tunisia. On the other hand, 16 people have died and 28 others are missing after a boat capsized off the coast of Djibouti.

The Tunisian Coast Guard said that the bodies of 19 people have been recovered so far. They were trying to go to Italy, a European country.

Desperation and fear were evident in the faces of the survivors brought to the town of Gadoria on the coast of Djibouti after the rescue. Later they were taken to the hospital for treatment. Later the United Nations Migration Agency IOM repatriated them to Ethiopia.

Iss Eiyah, a senior official at the Djibouti Coast Guard, said those on board the sunken boat wanted to leave Yemen. Because life there was more of a struggle than in their own country.

Ethiopia’s ambassador to Djibouti, Berhanu Segaye, expressed grief over the death of the migrants on the social media platform X. “Illegal travel from Djibouti to Middle Eastern countries is extremely dangerous and our citizens are constantly losing their lives,” he said.

Incidentally, every year thousands of African migrants try to cross the Red Sea to Saudi Arabia due to war, natural disasters and the hope of a better life. Many died in the boat sinking.
