Deep Depression Becomes Cyclone Remal : BWOT

The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into Cyclone Remal at 7:10 pm. It is likely to cross the coast between the night of May 26 and the morning of May 27 as a maximum category-1 storm. Bangladesh Weather Observation Team (BWOT) has given this information based on its own observation.

A message signed by BWOT chief meteorologist Khalid Hossain at 7:30 pm on Saturday (May 25) said the cyclone would cross the coast anywhere between Digha in West Bengal, India and Patuakhali, Bangladesh. However, Satkhira, Khulna and Bagerhat in Bangladesh are at the highest risk.

According to the message, the maximum strength of this cyclone may be Category-1. But it is expected that it will not get a speed of more than 135 km per hour. But the fear is that it could cross the coast in full force. Although gusty winds may have slightly higher velocities.

The impact will be on Bangladesh

According to the warning message published by BWOT, there is a danger of the cyclone hitting the land over the Sundarbans. Therefore, Bagerhat, Sarankhola, Barisal, Noakhali and even the remote islands of Chittagong will be in serious danger. Wind speed of 70-115 km per hour can blow in these areas. At the same time, there is a possibility of high tide of 6-8 feet.

There is a chance of rain all over the country

The impact of the cyclone is likely to bring rain across the country. However, coastal areas may be affected by heavy rainfall. Apart from this, there may be up to 200 to 500 mm rainfall in West Bengal, Khulna, Barisal areas. Apart from this, heavy rainfall is also expected in Chittagong, Dhaka, Sylhet, eastern part of Rajshahi division, Mymensingh area. Cyclone clouds have started entering the coastal areas of the country, which is expected to gradually spread to the rest of the country.

Fishermen advised to be cautious

North Bay of Bengal has already started to swell, so it is now unsafe to stay in the sea. Therefore, the BWOT has also warned the sea going trawlers and tourist boats to follow the warning signal announced by BMD and take safe position.

Advised to seek shelter by noon on May 26

The BWOT has advised the residents of the coastal areas, especially Bagerhat, Barguna, Patuakhali, Barisal and Noakhali, Bhola, Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar low-lying areas and islands to take safe positions by noon on May 26. At the same time, due to the threat of heavy rains across the country, it has been requested to collect the crops quickly across the country.
