Flood situation in West Bengal due to continuous rain

Incessant rains have created flood situation in several districts of South and North Bengal. As it rained overnight on Thursday (August 22), water continued to accumulate in these areas on Friday.

Earlier, a landslide in Sikkim caused a flood situation in Ghazaldoba in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal due to a partial collapse of a hydroelectric plant. The water level in Tangon, Punarbhava and Ganga rivers had risen. The water level of the rivers was flowing over the border. But gradually the flood situation in Jalpaiguri started to normalize and the water level of all the rivers came down from red warning to yellow warning.
Meanwhile, water level in Mahananda river in West Bengal has risen due to incessant rains. Besides, the water level in various rivers including Teesta, Torsa, Raidak, Jaldhaka has increased a lot. In the meantime, all the district administrations have increased vigilance and prepared for emergency situations. Besides, the state government has also directed the disaster response teams to be ready.
Kolkata’s Alipore Meteorological Office has informed that the influence of low pressure is over West Bengal. Several districts of South Bengal and North Bengal are expected to witness heavy rains with thundershowers by the end of the week.
