Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced today that her administration will provide a special stimulus package for medical research, urging doctors to focus more on health sector studies.

“Those engaged in medical science research will receive a special stimulus package from the government,” she stated.

Sheikh Hasina made these comments while presenting “Bangabandhu Science and Technology Fellowship,” “National Science and Technology (NST) Fellowship,” and special research grants to faculty, scientists, researchers, and students from various universities.

The ceremony, organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, took place at the Prime Minister’s Office in Dhaka.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of advancing medical science research and encouraged physicians to prioritize research over private practice for financial gain.

“We are falling behind in research in medical science. Instead of focusing on research, physicians are concentrating on their private practices to make money,” she noted.

Addressing the physicians at the event, she challenged them to reflect on this issue and encouraged them to undertake more research in medical science.

Sheikh Hasina highlighted that research is crucial for enabling doctors to administer effective treatments and maintain public health.

She again urged public service physicians to dial back their private practices in favor of increasing their research activities, assuring that the government is committed to supporting research efforts.

She attributed Bangladesh’s self-sufficiency in food production to the extensive research conducted in the agricultural sector, stressing the importance of prioritizing science and health research.

The Prime Minister assured her government’s dedication to medical science research and reminded that the funds for such research come from the public and should be used for their benefit.

Regarding the development of a second nuclear power plant, Sheikh Hasina mentioned the construction of the Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant and the intention to establish another in the country’s southern region, although the soil conditions there are not suitable. She confirmed plans to construct the second nuclear power plant in Ruppur following the completion of the first one.

“I’ve instructed the Science and Technology Minister to initiate the second project immediately after the first is completed, and we must start preparing for it now,” she concluded.

The event also featured speeches by Science and Technology Minister Architect Yeafesh Osman, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology Ministry Zahed Maleque, and Science and Technology Secretary Md. Ali Hossain.
