More than half of the people in the north-east African country of Sudan are now facing acute hunger, the United Nations has said.

On Thursday (August 1), the spokesperson of the Organization’s Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Stephen Dujarric, gave this information in a daily briefing. News Xinhua.

Stephen Dujarric said, ‘More than half of Sudan’s population, i.e. 26 million people, are now facing acute hunger, of which 755,000 people are facing catastrophic situations every day.
He also said that the latest report of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has revealed a catastrophic hunger situation in Sudan for the first time in the history of the IPC survey.

Dujarric said 14 areas of the country are at risk of famine in the coming months.

He said, “If you want to understand the situation there, know that on average one of every two Sudanese is struggling to collect the necessary daily food.”

Dujarric said the World Food Program (WFP) is working to save more lives by providing immediate assistance to millions of people across Sudan, especially in remote areas.

Stating the need to increase the amount of funds to ensure the necessary level of assistance to avert famine, he said, WFP has warned that there is a race against time to avert famine.

The United Nations and its partners have warned that if the current war, which began in April 2023, is not stopped, more people in Sudan will be pushed to the brink of starvation.
