Today is April 29. On this day in 1991, a catastrophic cyclone and tidal wave devastated the country’s coastal towns. On that day, a 25 km/h speed cyclone and a 6 feet high tide destroyed the coastal town. About 138,000 people were killed in the south-eastern coastal region of the country in the incident that day. 1 crore people lost everything.
The terrible incident of that day still haunts the coastal residents of Chittagong like a nightmare. Those sad memories still make the bereaved people cry.

Crop fields, lakhs of cattle were swept away by the flood caused by that cyclone. The total loss was one and a half billion dollars. Bhola, Hatia, Chittagong’s Sandwip, Anwara, Banshkhali, Cox’s Bazar’s Chakria, Maheshkhali and Kutubdia were the worst affected. Even after 28 years of this cyclone, those coastal areas are still unprotected.
In the incident of that day, significant areas of the city including Halishahar, Agrabad, Katghar, Bandar, Patenga were damaged in the port city of Chittagong. Anchored ships slip from the harbor. Navy ships were the worst affected. Many naval infrastructures were swept away by the tide. Air force aircraft were damaged. Many members of the Navy and Air Force were trapped in the tide while sleeping with their children and families. The beloved little child of many is swept away.
