The black-rumped flameback, with its striking golden back and vibrant red streaks, is a splendid sight that highlights the rich biodiversity of the region. Native to the Indian subcontinent, including Bangladesh, this woodpecker is not only a visual treat but also a vital indicator of ecological health.

Distinctive Appearance: Easily recognized by its golden-yellow wing coverts and contrasting black rump, the black-rumped flameback is distinct from its relative, the greater flameback, which features a red rump. The adults sport a dazzling red crown and crest, whereas females and young birds have a subtler color scheme, with black and white spots.

Habitat: Thriving in plains and lower mountainous regions up to 1,200 meters, these woodpeckers are versatile in their choice of environment. They are found in open forests and increasingly in urban areas with green avenues. Baridhara’s parks and lakesides, rich with trees, provide an ideal habitat for these birds.

Behavior: The black-rumped flameback is known for its loud “ki-ki-ki-ki-ki” call that accelerates into a trill. These birds are active foragers; they primarily feed on beetle larvae beneath bark, investigate termite mounds, and occasionally sip nectar. Their agile movements and hopping around branches help conceal them from potential predators.

Adaptation: This species is remarkably adaptable, utilizing both natural and human-altered habitats. It can often be seen nesting in artificial structures or foraging among fallen fruits and even food scraps, showing its ability to prosper near human activity.

The photographs taken in Baridhara—one capturing the bird pecking at a tree near the lake and another showing it sitting peacefully with lush greenery in the background—illustrate the adaptability and beauty of the black-rumped flameback, symbolizing nature’s resilience and elegance.

The presence of the black-rumped flameback in Dhaka serves as a reminder of the natural wonders in our midst, urging us to appreciate and protect our local biodiversity.
