26 people have been killed and at least 6 people are still missing in Indonesia’s West Sumatra province due to 5 consecutive days of heavy rains and resulting floods and landslides. Reuters reported this information in a report citing the country’s disaster management agency BNPB.
Rain has started in various parts of West Sumatra since Thursday, March 7. BNBP officials said that the incessant rains and the resulting floods and landslides have destroyed bridges, schools, at least 280 acres of crops and about 700 houses in different parts of the province.
Along with that, at least 39,000 people have suffered damage and suffering. The country’s Meteorological Department has said that there is no chance of improvement in the weather conditions for the time being, but there is a risk that the rain will continue for the next few days.
The central chief executive of BNPB arrived in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra, on Monday. There, he held an emergency meeting with the provincial officials of the office regarding the rescue of people from the affected areas and relief supplies.
Disaster Response Committee West Sumatra branch official Abdul Malik told Reuters that the work of sending tents, blankets, water purification medicine, food and cleaning materials to affected areas is underway and relief has already reached many areas.
