Allergies: A Common but Serious Health Concern

Almost everyone has experienced or heard about allergies. Common reactions include itching after eating beef or breathing difficulties from certain foods. However, pinpointing the exact triggers can be challenging since food, medication, dust, and insects can all cause allergic reactions.

Recognizing Allergy Symptoms

Allergy symptoms can range from constant sneezing, itchy noses, and runny or blocked noses, to watery and red eyes. Some individuals may experience full-body itching or difficulty breathing. In severe cases, allergies can close the airways, potentially leading to death if not treated promptly.

Understanding Allergies

Each body has a unique defense mechanism that reacts when a foreign substance is detected. Sometimes, the body mistakenly identifies a harmless substance as a threat, triggering an excessive reaction known as an allergy. Medically, this is referred to as Type One Hypersensitivity, and the triggering substances are called allergens.

Testing for Allergies

To identify specific allergens, a Hypersensitivity Test, such as the Skin Prick Test, can be conducted. This involves introducing small amounts of various substances into the skin and observing the reactions to determine which ones cause allergies.

Managing Allergies

The test results will highlight which foods or substances trigger allergic reactions in your body. Avoiding these can keep you safe. Over-the-counter antihistamines can help with minor allergies. However, severe reactions require immediate medical attention. In cases of severe breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or redness, it’s crucial to seek hospital care or visit a registered MBBS doctor immediately.
