In a recent move to alleviate the financial burden on consumers, Bangladesh has reduced the price of a 12kg LPG cylinder from Tk1,442 to Tk1,393. This change will take effect from 6pm on Thursday (2 May), according to Nurul Amin, Chairman of the organization, during a press conference at the BERC hall.
Consumers can now purchase LPG at a rate of Tk116.08 per kg, inclusive of VAT, at retail points. In contrast, LPG sold directly by the government will be priced at Tk16.08 per kg. This pricing strategy aims to make LPG more affordable across various sectors, including household cooking, transport, and industries, which have seen an uptick in LPG usage due to the halt in new natural gas connections.
The price reduction is not limited to the 12kg cylinder. Other sizes, including 5.5kg, 15kg, 16kg, 18kg, 20kg, 25kg, 30kg, 35kg, and 45kg, will also see a decrease in prices, making it more economical for users with varying needs.
Additionally, the price of autogas, commonly used as a fuel in vehicles, has been lowered to Tk63.92 per liter from the previous month’s Tk66.21. This reduction is expected to provide some relief to drivers amidst rising fuel costs.
Despite the official price drop, there have been complaints of overcharging by vendors. Investigations have confirmed such discrepancies, highlighting the need for stricter market surveillance to ensure compliance with the government-set prices.
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), in collaboration with Saudi Aramco, adjusts LPG prices monthly based on international market trends. Since the initial price setting on 12 April 2021, BERC has strived to balance consumer needs with market dynamics.
