Huawei’s cloud-computing division has teamed up with Beijing-based AI infrastructure start-up SiliconFlow to launch DeepSeek’s artificial intelligence (AI) models on its platform, reinforcing China’s push for technological self-sufficiency.

The partnership ensures that DeepSeek’s large language model V3 and reasoning model R1 are available to users through Huawei’s Ascend cloud service, offering performance comparable to leading global AI models running on premium GPUs. According to Huawei Cloud, this move delivers high efficiency and affordability for end users.

Affordable AI Access
SiliconFlow, which hosts the DeepSeek models, has introduced discounted pricing: V3 access costs just 1 yuan (US$0.13) per million input tokens and 2 yuan per million output tokens, while the R1 model is priced at 4 yuan and 16 yuan, respectively.

This launch comes as DeepSeek gains traction both in China and abroad. Microsoft recently integrated R1 into its Azure cloud-computing platform and GitHub, allowing AI applications to run on Copilot+ PCs. Meanwhile, Amazon Web Services has also enabled R1 integration, promoting it as a cost-effective AI solution.

China’s Push for AI Autonomy
Huawei’s Ascend cloud service, powered by its proprietary hardware solutions, highlights China’s progress in reducing reliance on foreign technology. While neither Huawei nor SiliconFlow disclosed the specific chips used, the move signals China’s determination to strengthen its domestic AI industry amid ongoing US restrictions on high-end semiconductor access.

DeepSeek, a Hangzhou-based AI start-up, has drawn attention for developing advanced AI models at a fraction of the cost incurred by US competitors. Chinese tech giant Tencent has also adopted DeepSeek’s R1 model, boasting a three-minute setup process on its cloud platform.

As China accelerates efforts to build a robust AI ecosystem, Huawei’s latest collaboration with SiliconFlow positions DeepSeek’s models as a key player in the nation’s bid for AI independence.
