The death toll from landslides and floods triggered by two days of heavy rain in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu has risen to 151. Besides, 56 people are still missing. In this situation, all schools have been declared closed for three days.

This information was published in a Reuters report on Sunday (September 29).

According to the report, floods have occurred in the low-lying areas of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, due to continuous rain since Friday night. It is reported that this heavy rain will continue throughout the week.

Kathmandu authorities said students and their parents faced problems as rain-damaged university and school buildings needed repairs.

Education Ministry Spokesperson Lakshmi Bhattarai said, “We have urged the concerned authorities to close the schools in the affected areas for three days.

According to the Meteorological Office, the weather has improved slightly on Sunday morning, the rain has reduced in many places. Light rain is possible in the coming days, but heavy rain is unlikely.

Many highways are blocked due to landslides. As a result, the road communication with the rest of the country was practically stopped. Rescue workers are carrying out rescue operations with the help of helicopters.

Meanwhile, local flights from Kathmandu have resumed. Earlier, more than 150 flights were canceled on Friday evening due to inclement weather.

In 2024, at least 260 people lost their lives in rain-related disasters in Nepal.
