The High Court today issued a directive questioning why the family of Tashfian Atif, a volunteer who tragically lost his life while attempting to rescue a bird, should not receive compensation. The court’s ruling came in response to a writ petition filed by Atif’s mother, Tanzina Rahman.

The High Court Division Bench, comprising Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Mohammad Atabullah, went a step further by instructing the Inspector General of Police to ensure that no animal rescue organization allows its volunteers or workers to undertake rescue operations without proper training and essential safety gear.

The tragic incident occurred on December 21st of the previous year when Tashfian Atif, a member of the “Robinhood: The Animal Rescue Society,” was electrocuted while attempting to rescue a bird stuck on an electric pole in the Hasnabad Insaf Bazaar area of South Keraniganj, Dhaka. Atif was initially rushed to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery with severe burns, but his condition deteriorated, leading to his admission to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries on December 22nd.

The High Court’s ruling not only seeks justice for Atif’s family but also aims to ensure proper safety measures are implemented for those dedicated individuals who put their lives on the line to protect and rescue animals.
