At least 19 people have died after a highway collapsed late at night in China’s southern Guangdong province. Many others were injured.
This information was published in a report of Al Jazeera on Wednesday (May 1).
A 17.9-meter (58.7-foot) stretch of the S12 highway connecting Meizhou City and Dabu County collapsed at around 2:10 a.m. local time on Wednesday, reports said. Dozens of people in 18 vehicles were trapped there.
The report also said that 19 people have been confirmed dead and 30 people are being treated in hospital as of 11:45 am local time. However, the lives of those receiving treatment at the hospital are not currently in danger.
Meanwhile, the country’s state media CCTV reported that the authorities sent around 500 people to the scene to assist in the rescue operation immediately after the incident. However, it is not yet clear what exactly caused the highway to collapse.
