With temperatures soaring higher this year than usual, parents must take extra precautions to protect their children. Here, we explore some common health issues children face during the heat and how to address them effectively.
Skin Problems
Heat-related skin issues are far more frequent in children during summer. Rashes, itching, and dermatitis can be common nuisances. To reduce these problems, limit children’s outdoor exposure during peak heat, ensure they consume plenty of vegetables, water, and seasonal fruits. Older children can also use sunscreen to protect their skin from sun damage.
Stomach Issues
Hot weather often leads school-going children to consume street food and unsafe beverages, which can increase the risk of food poisoning, stomach ailments, and even typhoid. Providing home-cooked meals is an effective way to mitigate these risks.
Viral Fever and Colds
With the changing weather at the start of summer, children are more susceptible to fever, coughs, and colds. Family members often get affected around the same time. Common symptoms include fever, sore throat, runny nose, and cough. Maintaining cleanliness and avoiding very cold, frozen foods are crucial preventive measures. A balanced diet including leafy vegetables, seasonal fruits, and enough fluids can help alleviate and prevent these symptoms.
Urinary Infections
Children can sweat excessively in the heat, and when combined with insufficient water intake, it may lead to dehydration. Dehydration can increase the risk of urinary infections and painful urination. To prevent this, ensure children drink sufficient water, consume vegetables and fruits, and parents should regularly remind them to stay hydrated.
Let’s ensure that all children remain healthy during this hot season through proactive care. We pray for the health and well-being of every child.
