Tori Towey, an Irish woman from County Roscommon, is facing criminal charges in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), including attempted suicide and alcohol abuse. The situation, described by the Taoiseach as “the most appalling circumstances,” has drawn significant attention and concern.
Irish Government Steps In
In the Dáil, Simon Harris expressed his readiness to intervene in response to Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald’s call for action. McDonald revealed that Towey’s passport had been destroyed and that she was under a travel ban. The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
Human Rights Advocate Speaks Out
Human rights advocate Radha Stirling, from the group Detained in Dubai, is assisting Towey. Stirling explained that Towey, a 28-year-old air hostess based in Dubai, is due in court next week and is unable to afford legal representation. Despite the challenges, Stirling is optimistic that international pressure will help resolve the case quickly.
Family’s Hope for Quick Resolution
Towey’s mother has traveled to Dubai to support her daughter, who is eager to return home. The family remains hopeful that diplomatic efforts by the Irish government will lead to a favorable outcome and that Towey will be back in Ireland soon.
