Public Backs Reclassification of Cannabis
A recent survey reveals that most Thais support Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s plan to reclassify cannabis as a narcotic, limiting its use to medical purposes. Conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration, the poll found that approximately 76% of respondents agreed with the policy shift, while 23.4% opposed it.
Impact on Thailand’s Cannabis Industry
The move is expected to significantly affect Thailand’s emerging cannabis industry, which saw nearly 8,000 dispensaries and numerous consumer-agro firms flourish since the drug was decriminalized. The initial legalization was intended to boost agricultural income and the country’s wellness tourism sector.
Protests from Cannabis Advocacy Groups
Cannabis advocacy groups have protested the proposed reclassification, urging the government to reconsider the decision to safeguard the burgeoning industry and the interests of a large community of growers. Despite these protests, the government remains firm on its stance to restrict marijuana use to medical applications only.
Comparisons with Global Trends
The Netherlands, previously known for its lenient cannabis policies, has also adopted stricter regulations to curb cannabis tourism. This global trend towards tighter controls reflects a growing caution in the recreational use of cannabis.
