Martinez’s heroics in the tiebreaker against France in the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar is, however, embarrassing for him. This season, he scored a suicide goal for the third time. No goalkeeper has scored three own goals since the Premier League began in 1992. That precedent was seen for the first time in the welfare of the Argentine star.

Such a feat of scoring a suicide goal has only been seen twice in the Premier League before. 11 goalkeepers have scored own goals until Martinez. They are — Mark Boone, Peter Cheek, Shay Given, Rob Green, Kasper Smeikel, Russell Holt, Tom Heaton, Tim Krall, Bernd Leno, Jussi Jaskalainen and Richard Wright. Besides, 53 goalkeepers scored one suicide goal each.
Martinez’s mistake yesterday was in the second minute of the opening. Harvey Elliott attacked first on the right wing for Liverpool. The Allreds’ winger didn’t take a direct shot on goal, but the ball went into Martinez’s hands. After catching it, the Aston Villa goalkeeper stuck the ball in his own net without being able to control it. In the beginning, the fourth team fell behind 1-0. In the end, Villa left the field with a draw.
