On March 14, 2024, the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, was reported to have personally driven a newly introduced main battle tank during military exercises, according to state media. This event occurred as the United States and South Korea concluded their joint military exercises aimed at enhancing deterrence capabilities.
Dressed in a black leather jacket, Kim was seen saluting troops dressed in camouflage and observing a live-fire training exercise from a command post in the field, surrounded by senior military officials. Photos released by state media captured these moments.
Following his inspection of the tank units, Kim took the helm of the “new-type main battle tank,” taking control and driving it, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
This report coincides with the final day of the annual Freedom Shield exercises between Seoul and Washington, which include missile interception and air assault drills among other activities.
North Korea, which possesses nuclear weapons, has historically criticized the military drills conducted jointly by the US and South Korea, viewing them as preparations for an invasion. In response, it has frequently conducted weapons tests following such drills.
Kim expressed his satisfaction with the new tank’s performance, praising its striking capabilities. He emphasized the crucial role of tank operators in contemporary warfare and the necessity of conducting rigorous exercises that simulate real war conditions.
Last week, Pyongyang issued a warning over the Freedom Shield exercises conducted by South Korea and the US, threatening consequences. Subsequently, it was reported that Kim had overseen a significant artillery exercise of a unit claimed to be capable of targeting Seoul.
Meanwhile, South Korea’s Defense Minister Shin Won-sik recently visited the Special Warfare Command’s headquarters amidst the ongoing drills with the US, focusing on advanced combat training. This included preparations for potential operations targeting key facilities within North Korea in the event of an attack by Pyongyang.
Shin encouraged the troops, highlighting the importance of becoming the premier special warfare unit capable of swiftly neutralizing the enemy’s leadership should Kim Jong Un initiate a conflict.
This year, North Korea has labeled South Korea as its “chief enemy,” dismantled agencies responsible for reunification efforts and outreach, and issued threats of war over minor territorial provocations.
