OpenAI Halts Sky Voice in ChatGPT Over Scarlett Johansson Similarity
OpenAI has paused the use of the Sky voice in ChatGPT due to concerns that it closely resembles actress Scarlett Johansson’s voice from the movie “Her.” The company clarified that the voices used in ChatGPT, including Sky, were sourced from paid voice actors. From an initial pool of 400 candidates, five voices were selected, and it’s purely coincidental that Sky sounds similar to Johansson.
Introduction of GPT-4o Model
The suspension comes as OpenAI plans to introduce the new GPT-4o model into ChatGPT. This updated model will feature a new conversational interface, allowing users to engage in real-time conversations with a natural-sounding and emotion-responsive AI.
The Impact of Voice Similarity
The resemblance to Johansson’s voice became more pronounced after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and others noted the similarities between the new AI model and Johansson’s role in “Her.” In the movie, Johansson voices an advanced AI operating system that forms a relationship with a lonely writer, highlighting the emotional mimicry capability that parallels GPT-4o’s features.
Enhanced Multimodal Capabilities
GPT-4o sets itself apart from previous models with its multimodal capabilities, understanding and generating images, text, video, and speech. This feature allows for real-time, emotionally adaptable conversations, raising concerns about potential misuse, including creating deepfakes.
Voice Actor Selection Process
OpenAI detailed the process of selecting voice actors for ChatGPT. Five voices—Breeze, Cove, Ember, Juniper, and Sky—were chosen from over 400 submissions. Each actor was compensated above top-market rates and brought to San Francisco for recording sessions. OpenAI emphasized that Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress.
