A seemingly innocent Pokemon card shop in Hung Hom turned out to be a front for a massive drug operation, leading to the seizure of HK$10 million (US$1.3 million) worth of suspected crystal meth.
Police Raid Exposes Drug Storage
Hong Kong police raided the 400 sq ft Pokemon card shop, popular among local teenagers and children, revealing its dark secret. Officers arrested a 28-year-old man, one of the shop’s owners, after discovering 5kg of crystal meth during a stop-and-search operation outside the store. An additional 16kg of the drug was later found in the shop’s staff area.
Risks to the Community
Inspector Liong Chun-hin of the narcotics bureau expressed concern about the irresponsible storage of such a large quantity of narcotics in a place frequented by young people. Although no customers were involved in the trafficking activities, the presence of drugs in the store posed a significant risk to the community.
Legal Consequences
The arrested man is suspected of working with a drug syndicate, using the Pokemon card shop as a cover for the operation. He is likely to be charged with drug trafficking, an offense that could result in life imprisonment, and is expected to appear in Kowloon City Court on Wednesday.
